Tell Us A Little Something About Yourself
As Covid ravaged the travel industry, my role was regrettably made redundant. After applying for hundreds of jobs, I decided to turn my attention to my hobby and the richmond candle co. was born. Several months later I had no idea our candles were going to be so popular! I still haven’t managed to get a job but my passion for candles and for business is seeing me find new success.
What Inspired You To Start Your Own Business and What does your journey look like?
I was making candles for my home and for close friends and family, i kept being told that I should sell them and after my job was made redundant I took the leap and it’s been amazing ever since!
What Does Your Business Offer, And What Makes It Unique?
We craft our candles with 100% natural and renewable soy wax, blended with luxury fragrance oils boosted with essential oils and then set in gorgeous, thick, high clarity glass with a beautiful timber lid. Our candles not only look super stylish but will have your home or workspace smelling absolutely sublime.
What does your Journey Look Like?
I started off just making candles for my own home and for some close friends and family. After getting regular comments about how good they looked and how wonderful they smelt, I was encouraged to sell them more widely. Then after my role was made redundant in the travel industry, I took a leap of faith and it’s been amazing.
Did You Always Think You'd Be Doing This?
No way not at all. I was a Sales Manager at a travel company and imagined myself being involved in travel my entire life. When I was a kid I got a kick out of selling second hand goods and I guess my career in sales was kind of born there. I’ve always enjoyed helping people buy things they are going to love so I guess my sales career and making and selling candles has collided!
What Are The Most Rewarding And Challenging Parts Of Your Job And Owning Your Own Business?
I absolutely love delivering candles to customers and having a conversation. Are they gifts, which is your favourite, etc. Getting comments and reviews afterward is the most rewarding part. The challenging part is the marketing side, we all have strengths and weaknesses and I guess I kind of enjoy marketing the least... interacting with customers and making the candles is my favourite part.
Whats Your End Goal? The Moment You'll Know You've Achieved What You Want To?
I don’t have an end goal, I believe in unlimited goals, a goal that keeps you moving forward rather than one that ends once you achieve it. For me, I want to make candles our customers love and keep coming back for. A repeat customer is the ultimate validation you’ve done a good job. I get up every day with the aim to see as many of my candles as possible turn into a regular customer.
