Tell Us A Little Something About Yourself

I’m a wife, mother and teacher currently on maternity leave. I love being active and spending quality time with friends and family. I started watercolour painting three years ago as a hobby when I started maternity leave and have grown to love it and love sharing my paintings with others.

What Inspired You To Start Your Own Business?

Having only ever painted for my family, I wanted to continue sharing my passion and painting with others in the wider community. I chose to do custom paintings so that each piece is unique and has special meaning to the individual who has ordered it.

I have kept prices partially low as Little Willow is not about making heaps of money, but rather sharing my love of painting with others.

What Does Your Business Offer, And What Makes It Unique?

Little Willow Creations specialises in hand painted custom watercolour artwork, particularly family and pet portraits, but also wall decor and nursery decor.

All artwork is completely custom made and the customer has a big contribution in the design and planning process.

What Does Your Journey Look Like?

I grew up with a love of drawing, particularly horses. Growing up on a farm with a horse of my own sparked my passion. As I finished school and started uni and full time work I found there was very little time to draw anymore, so I was forced to put that hobby aside.

Since having my first child 3 1/2 years ago my best friend introduced me to watercolours. I bought all the gear and started with simple cards and painting flowers. The more I painted, the more I wanted to learn and try new things.

At the start of 2020 I decided to start Little Willow Creations as a way to share my paintings with others; to be pushed out of my comfort zone and to try new ideas. Through this I found myself exploring different styles and ideas.

More recently I have started painting family and pet portraits which has been such a privilege and honour to be trusted with very special images.

My business is continually growing and evolving but the core purpose remains: to share my love of painting.

Did You Always Think You'd Be Doing This?

Before maternity leave I was working full time as a Health & Physical Education Teacher and had no plans to pursue my own business.

I’ve never referred to myself an artist and never imagined myself to be a painter, or to own my own business.

It was only when I started maternity leave that I began to explore new ways to be creative while at home with little children.

What Are The Most Rewarding And Challenging Parts Of Your Job And Owning Your Own Business?

The most rewarding part of Little Willow is being able to bless my customers with artwork that is so special to them. I put a lot of time and effort into each piece and the reaction and feedback I receive is so rewarding. I love making other people happy!

The most challenging part of owning my own business is juggling it alongside parenting. My family always comes first, so I don’t like to paint while they are in my care - this leaves very little time to paint during the day and I often find myself painting late at night.

Whats Your End Goal? The Moment You'll Know You've Achieved What You Want To?

I don’t particularly have an ‘end goal’ - I just want to keep sharing my artwork and blessing the wider community with my gift.
