Tell Us A Little Something About Yourself
I have quite a colourful backstory.
I've been lucky enough to work in many different industries, across many different parts of the world. These range from Digital Marketing here in Sydney, to in-house fashion retail marketing in London, to even helping launch a chartered airline in Brisbane; I've experienced a lot.
Each year I try to learn a new skill, some notable mentions include DJing, Dragon Boat racing, fashion illustration, mediation and a few attempts at learning French. However it wasn't until I took a handbag making course in Milan back in 2014 that I knew I'd found my calling.
So after 20 years of working in communications strategy across various industries, I decided to brave it on my own and start my Hills & West journey.
What Inspired You To Start Your Own Business?
When I started out, I had no idea what my business would look like. All I knew was that I loved creating things, collaborating with inspirational people, and challenging the norms.
However, after 6 months travelling through less developed countries like India and Nepal, plus 10 straight days of Vipassana, it was solidified in my mind that there are so many communities less fortunate than ours, and ultimately life is too short to not even attempt giving back.
The reality was I'd spent most of my career developing skills which helped other businesses grow, so thought why not create a lifestyle accessory brand, where I can give back a little, support local, all while working with inspiring people myself.
What Does Your Business Offer, And What Makes It Unique?
Hills & West brings Australian made, sustainable, luxe, timeless and versatile, lifestyle accessories with a minimal aesthetic to life (for both women and men).
Hills & West has been accepted for the ‘Australian Made’ trademark, which is so important to us as we are avid supporters of local businesses and homegrown products and want to keep these skills and traditions local, while intertwining learnings from Italy where I crafted my skills.
We have also recently taken the Hills & West aesthetic into Home Accessories and interior styling as well.
What Does Your Journey Look Like?
Hills & West was always a passion project of mine. From the beginning my mission has been simple – create exceptional pieces, while doing what I love, and make people happy along the way.
I started by designing my first collection while simultaneously defining the kind of business I wanted to be.
Once this was established, I realised I missed working and creating with other entrepreneurs, so started Digital & Agile Consulting, my boutique communications agency, helping businesses share their story. I then also just recently started Hills & West Interiors which is in line with the Hills & West ethos to add practical, luxurious finishing touches to your home.
Now five years on, it has been such a wonderful journey. I have created with so many amazing and talented people, I feel truly blessed. I know that the next five years are going to be even more wonderful, filled with life learnings, no matter what challenges are thrown my way.
Did You Always Think You'd Be Doing This?
I love creating and collaborating, however I was always open to what that looked like. With Hills & West there are so many directions to go. That is what really excites me. Hopefully with a lot of hard work, and some fun, we can love the life we all live. If COVID has taught us anything, life is short and we don't know what tomorrow will bring.
What Are The Most Rewarding And Challenging Parts Of Your Job And Owning Your Own Business?
Most rewarding is collaborating with other creatives and making my customers happy and feel good about themselves.
Most challenging is always cashflow and managing the millions of tasks, however this has become easier over time.
Whats Your End Goal? The Moment You'll Know You've Achieved What You Want To?
Besides building out my Interior Styling and Decorating Services, I definitely see lots of collaborations with other creatives. I have connected with many other strong Australian female (and some male) founders, and I want to be more of an ambassador for Australian fashion so watch this space. I would like to build on this and roll it out all over the world.
In keeping with my original inspiration, I would also love to take Hills & West development to other communities around the world where crafting my products will help support communities that are not as well off as we are.
