Bhumi Organic Cotton
Meet Vinita of Bhumi Organic Cotton located in Melbourne, VicTell Us A Little Something About Yourself and What Inspired You To Start Your Own Business?
Vinita has been fortunate enough to travel to many exciting destinations on the planet and experience the beauty of nature and cultures of the world. With a background in Health and a Masters in International Public Health Vinita saw first hand the disastrous health and environmental impacts of traditional cotton growing with farmer suicides, child labour, pesticide poisoning, birth defects, harmful dyes and toxic water ways. After years in the field meeting with amazing NGOs, grassroots organisations and a growing movement of organic farmers, it was time for positive change. Vinita combined her deep love for the Earth, humanity and sustainable design to create Bhumi Organic Cotton.

What does your Journey Look Like?
An abundant travel itinerary, combined with a consciousness around our sustainable existence on this planet were some of the main driving forces behind Bhumi. It all started – as a side hustle at the end of 2015, after relocating back to Melbourne from New York. Once I connected the dots of the realities of the textile industry, which is rife with unregulated child labour, toxins within cotton farming and chemicals used in the making of fabrics, it was about doing something about it. We initially just started as a pop store and selling in markets, which was incredibly important to validate our ideas. It was when we focussed Online, and started to reach a much broader audience is when things really picked up.Did You Always Think You'd Be Doing This?
My background is in Public Health - no, I did not think one day I would be running a Sustainable Bedding & Clothing company - it wasn't even a passing thought. Now I look at Bhumi as a tool to bring about positive change for the planet and her people. What Are The Most Rewarding And Challenging Parts Of Your Job And Owning Your Own Business?
Bhumi is a brand built on absolute consideration not only of the planet but her people - so to be doing this everyday without doubting the vision and ethos is very inspiring and exciting. It is also fair to say maintaining 100% ownership makes it more rewarding. We are proud to be a 100% Australian owned family business i.e. no venture capitalists, or external funds or investors. We work for the planet and her people as the primary focus.
The challenges we face are mostly around work/life boundaries. There is no set time for work, it’s around the clock and now we (Dushyant who is my Cofounder and also life partner) are both working from home, balance is out the window. Sometimes it’s hard to remember to create time regularly for downtime and family time.Whats Your End Goal? The Moment You'll Know You've Achieved What You Want To?
The use of certified organic cotton across the globe is less than 1%, somewhere in the 0.5% range to be even more precise. So, specifically speaking, over the course of our journey if we can help get the usage of organic cotton to about 5%, we have significantly set a trend in textiles and moved the needle from a positive social and environmental impact perspective.
